Legend has it that a group of friends in a village in the south of France played boules in the square every evening outside the cafe bar. The bar had a comely waitress, called Fanny. One night, to encourage the players, she promised that the winner could give her a kiss. Unfortunately, one of the more lecherous and obnoxious players won and entered the bar to claim his prize. Fanny, promising to give him his prize, told him to close his eyes and pucker up. As he did, she leapt onto a table, pulled down her knickers, and told him to kiss away. The rest is history. Today, boules players call a 13-0 loss a ‘fanny’and in some clubs players who are fannied have to kneel, put their head through a toilet seat, and kiss a painting or a photograph of someone’s derriere. Lacking such a painting or photograph, we have ‘Fanny’s Roll of Dishonour.’
